University of Illinois

Champaign-Urbana, Illinois

The LZT Associates/Larson & Darby Group served as prime architect for the 256,000 s.f. Computer Science Center at the University of Illinois. The firm worked in association with design architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ). The center is constructed as a “smart” building. It incorporates cutting-edge technology and is designed with anticipation of future evolutions in technology. It has been customized towards facilitating wireless education and communication. The facility includes classrooms, an auditorium, offices and labs.

Smart panels are located throughout the building and operate as computerized schedulers and dayminders. In addition, the smart panels control the smart boards and allow the user to control the environment with the touch of a finger. Lighting, temperature, security, window treatments and the presentation can be controlled through the smart panel. A studio and capture room allow professors to record and send their lectures via the internet. Through this method, students can audit classes or even obtain a master’s degree online.

There are several unique design aspects to this facility. The building automation system is essential as a conveyor of information as well as controlling security. Utilizing much more than a typical electronic lock system, card readers at control points can recognize the user and adjust the environmental settings in his/her office.

The Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science addresses the needs of the future yet is designed to compliment the traditional campus architecture.

De Kalb County Farm Bureau, Sycamore, Illinois

This is a 41,500 SF facility consisting of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, local government agencies, credit organizations, insurance carriers, and other agricultural support organizations. Shared facilities include an auditorium, multi-purpose room, and training room. The architecture of this facility draws upon the usage of rural agricultural structures. In 1993, Larson and Darby began looking at the original facility and completed feasibility studies for the 35-member board. After completion of the studies, design work began in August of 1994 and bid documents were completed in April of 1995. At each phase of the design process our team worked with the DeKalb County Farm Bureau’s 35-member board for approvals. Construction began in August of 1995 and our client moved in during June of 1996.

“They spent the time to understand who we are and what we’re trying to accomplish before they started the design…Our tenants are very pleased…They like the atmosphere, the working conditions, and the image.”

Doug Dashner, Manager, DeKalb County Center for Agriculture
